Bocking Hall just outside Braintree is one of the many listed buildings that Sterling Timber and Damp has been called upon to treat in order to preserve the structural integrity of timbers and exposed wood. All the exterior brick and stone work was thoroughly cleaned using specialist low abrasion techniques. Internal features like the gallery stairs and fireplace were stripped, hand cleaned and French polished in some areas, removing 14 coats of high density stain in the process.

Brentwood’s Thorndon Hall received intense industry interest when Sterling Timber and Damp pioneered the use of the tanking system to treat the rising and penetrating damp that threatened this beautiful and substantial Grade One Listed Building. In the intervening 20 years, the treatment has continued to keep the damp at bay with complete success.

Also in Brentwood, in the village of Ingrave, we were called upon to restore a cottage that nobody even knew existed! The 1530 cottage was on a plot of land sold by the Green Man pub in the village for use as a car park. Imaging the new owners’ surprise when the not only found an uninhabited timber framed cottage hidden by a mass of trees and bushes. There was even a tree growing right up through the house. Despite having been treated some 20 years earlier, there was a massive amount of work to be done. Much of this was rectifying work done previously that had not been done correctly. This is just another demonstration of the old saying "buy right, buy onceÓ.

At Good Easter, we had to virtually dismantle and rebuild a timber framed building that had just been purchased, despite the surveyors employed by the estate agents giving it a clean bill of health. Even though this was in the early 1980’s the insurance claim ran to nearly £50K. This cautionary tale should encourage anyone considering the purchase of an older timber framed building to get a specialist survey before they part with any money.

If you have made a purchase only to find that there is a problem with the timbers or structure despite the building having a clean sheet from the estate agent or building society surveyor, very often we have been able to help customers recover substantial damages where surveyors have been negligent or unqualified to assess the true condition of timber, brick and stonework.

The Church of St Nicholas in Canewdon is reputedly the most haunted in the country and Jim got locked in there for a whole night when the vicar went home to watch the world cup! We were called in to inspect the main oak beams in the belfry for death watch beetle. In order to see where the problems were, it was necessary to do a tight rope walker impression on a narrow beam 80 feet in the air. Even worse, the beams were so riddled with death watch beetle that after treatment we were able to watch the larvae falling out all over the floor.

Luckily, Jim’s mobile was still in the building. Sadly, he had left it at the top of the tower before going down to lock up. While running up the stairs, he heard the low battery warning beep and had just enough power to call the police for help before being totally cut off from the outside world. Some two hours later (coincidentally just after the end of the football), the police, complete with vicar arrived to liberate Jim so that he could go home.

One of Galleywood’s best known landmarks had a dome that was riddled with dry rot. The building, which can be seen from Highlands Hall in Chelmsford, needed extensive treatment to remove dry rot and woodworm from existing timbers before they could be supplemented with replacements of some that could not be saved.

In Tollshunt D’Arcy, there was a listed building that was leaning dangerously and looking like it was going to fall into the road at any minute. There was extensive dry rot and beetle infestations. As if to make matters worse a previous attempt at increasing space had involved cutting through all the purlings in the loft space, thereby dangerously weakening the structure. This allowed the entire building to bow and shift almost to the point of collapse.

Next to Holy Trinity Church we were involved in a tanking job at an estate agent’s office and learned of an interesting twin tunnel from the church that went to a competing estate agent at one end and the Half Moon pub at the other. The Blue Boar pub in Southend’s Victoria Avenue needed extensive treatment for woodworm and rising damp. We also carried out a good deal of conservation work to the cottages opposite, that date from a much earlier time.

St Saviour’s Church in Westcliff on Sea is another building where we have been called upon to carry out major restoration work to timber both structural and decorative. Sterling Timber and Damp specialists also carried out a major refit of the roof including leadwork and tiles.
